Tank Excavation

A leaky fuel storage tank can become a real mess and an expensive environmental hazard. A leaky, older underground storage tank can detract from the resale value of your home. Underground tanks also leak more often than most people think, and there are usually no outward signs of a problem. (See Six Myths About Underground Oil Tanks.) Whether you have an under- or aboveground fuel tank, Bantam Fuel is a licensed replacement specialist. We have the expertise to assist you in replacing your tank with a modern, clean system that best fits your needs.

Trust Bantam Fuel for safe, certified Underground Tank Replacement.

We have the expertise to remove your underground tank and a replace it with a modern, clean basement fuel storage system that fits your needs. Here’s what Bantam Fuel’s Tank Replacement Program provides:

  1. A complete tank inspection and site survey.
  2. A written proposal that outlines everything required, no surprises. We can even discuss financing options.
  3. Excavation and removal of your old underground tank.
  4. A soil test for contamination. If the test comes back clean, we’ll fill the hole with clean dirt, put down fresh topsoil, and seed the area. If your tank has leaked (nearly half of the tanks we remove have), we will legally dispose of the contaminated soil and re-test to confirm that your property is clean.
  5. Installation of a new, clean basement tank. We’ll seal it so it’s airtight and pipe it to the outside of your home.
  6. Transfer of any clean oil from your old tank to your new tank. You won’t lose the value of fuel you’ve already paid for.  If there is sludge in your old tank, we will remove it and dispose of it as waste oil.
  7. Clear, detailed legal documentation of the tank removal and soil tests.

We’ve removed hundreds of buried oil tanks for customers – customers who now enjoy higher property values and peace of mind.  If you’d like to discuss underground tank replacement, please call us at (860) 567-9431, or e-mail.

Six Myths About Underground Oil Tanks

#1:  “A leaking oil tank will always have dead plants and grass above it.”
We have excavated many leaky tanks that were buried beneath lush, green grass and bushes!

#2:  “A leaking tank will use more oil than it used to.”
When most tanks begin to leak, it’s through an opening the size of a pinhole. A pinhole leak can allow just a few gallons of fuel to seep into the surrounding soil each year. Ten gallons of oil, leaked over 4 or 5 years, can contaminate quite a lot of soil, but you wouldn’t notice a ten-gallon difference in a household using 1,000 gallons of fuel/yr.

#3:  “Underground tanks leak only rarely: It’s all a bunch of media hype.”
The fact is, almost 50% the underground tanks we take out are “leakers” (compared with only about 25% ten years ago).

#4:  “A new tank will never fit through the door, and there’s no roomfor it in my basement.”
Basement tanks come in all shapes and sizes, including shapes specifically designed to fit through doorways and down stairs! Once installed, they take up only two feet of space against an outside wall, and they still give you plenty of storage capacity.

#5:  “Oil tanks in the basement smell strongly of oil, especially when a delivery is made.”
The truth is that no basement tank should ever smell like oil, even during a delivery.  Even old tanks can be cleaned up, and the pipes can be tightened up, so that there is never a whiff of oil.

#6:  “Since there is no basement in my house, I’m stuck with my old, buried tank.”
Actually, you have three choices in this situation: 1) We can install a tank outdoors, behind the house in some discreet location, or 2) we can buy a new, corrosion-resistant tank with a 30-year warranty. Remember, there’s no rule that says you can’t bury a tank. It’s that old, rusting one you need to worry about. Finally, 3) you can easily convert your oil furnace to propane, which is much more flexible when it comes to tank location.
